A Study On American's Beginning College Survey Of Student Engagement(BCSSE)

The American "Beginning College Survey of Student Engagement "(BCSSE)is a Survey focusing on the Engagement of College freshmen.BCSSE started in 2007 and,within the 12 years,about 900,000 first-year students from more than 500 universities in the UK,US and Canada taking part in the survey.Students' learning experience in high school and the expectation of first year in college are the two dimensions of BCSSE.This paper is based on the fact that there are a large number of freshmen entering colleges and universities in China every year,and the investigation of freshmen's engagement in first year is more and more important.The BCSSE is not only helpful for freshmen to adapt to college study smoothly,but it also helpful for colleges and universities to pick up the student with the risk of dropping out,improving curriculum setting and mobilize the teacher-student interaction.It also helpful for the national higher education quality assessment system to improve.On the basis of the history and current situation of student engagement,this paper analyzes the basic institution setting of BCSSE,the reform and development,index and characteristics of the scale,summary report,etc.Then summarizes the impact of BCSSE from three aspects of freshmen,colleges,and national higher education quality assessment.This paper use the way of documentation method,to reviews the history and current situation of "learning engagement" at domestic and foreign,and sorts out the five aspects of BCSSE's practical impacts with the index system,implementation and operation,annual report with the method of case analysis.By using the method of comparative research,this paper compares BCSSE with the "survey on the adaptability of freshmen in capital universities" in China,and at the same time,reviews the reform and development of BCSSE.Using case study method to explore the characteristics and revelation of BCSSE,explores its findings for American colleges and universities,the government and the practical significance of the individual.The last on the basis of analyzing the research status of Chinese freshman learning.Finally,this paper draws some conclusions about the establishment of the organization in the area of freshmen survey in China,the development of the scale and knotted the cooperation between colleges and institutions,and the improvement of the use of the results.
