| In recent years, the aesthetic concept of"thin is beautiful"has been widely spread in the mass media, which gradually increases the incidence of eating disorders in young women. As one of the most common and critical maladaptive behaviors in the development of eating disorders, restrained eating has a variety of negative effects on individuals, such as affecting neuron and brain development, causing negative emotion, and leading to eating disorders such as bulimia and binge eating.Female college students are in the stage of physical and psychological maturation and are more susceptible to the influence of the current social and cultural concept of"thinness is beauty".Therefore, the study on the influencing factors of restrained eating behaviors of female college students is worthy of attention. In addition, with the rapid rise and widespread use of social networking sites(SNSs),body image comparison on SNSs has become an inevitable phenomenon in the use of social networking sites. Moreover,in view of the inconsistent research results about the relationship between the use of social networking sites and eating disorder behaviors, the researchers proposed that it is necessary to discuss the relationship between specific use of social networking sites(body image comparison on social networking sites)and individual eating disorder behaviors. Therefore, based on relevant theories and previous research, this study intends to explore the effect of body image comparison on SNSs on restrained eating of female college students, and to further explore the mechanism between them and whether there is individual difference in this mechanism.Specifically, the mediating role of body shame and the moderating role of body appreciation were investigated.Questionnaire method was adopted to measure the body image comparison on SNSs,body shame, body appreciation and restrained eating of 747 female college students in class.SPSS23.0 and SPSS process were used to analyze and process the questionnaire data. The results showed that:(1)body image comparison on SNSs,body shame, body appreciation and restrained eating all had significant grade effect;(2)body image comparison on SNSs,body shame and restrained eating were positively correlated with each other, while body appreciation was significantly negatively correlated with body shame and restrained eating, but not significantly correlated with body image comparison on SNSs;(3)body image comparison on SNSs was significantly positive in predicting restrained eating;(4)body shame partially mediated the relationship between body image comparison on SNSs and restrained eating;(5)the mediating role of body shame in the relationship between body image comparison on SNSs and restrained eating is moderated by body appreciation.Specifically, for individuals with high body appreciation level, the mediating role of body shame is smaller. In addition, this study did not find a moderating effect of body appreciation on the relationship between body image comparison on SNSs and restrained eating. The results of this study have some implications:it improves our understanding of the relationship between the use of social networking sites and the negative mental health outcomes of individuals, and also indicates that it is necessary and important to explore the specific use process that may lead to negative psychological effects in the use of social networking sites. In addition, the study of positive body image also provides a unique perspective for the discussion of the influence of media on women’s body image and broadens the perspective for the treatment and intervention of body image disturbance and eating disorder. On the practical level,it can also provide some advice and guidance for educators and female college students. |
