Since the enlarged enrollment of higher education, the number of university graduates has increased dramatically, and with the impact of downward economic pressures gradually highlighted in recent years,a simple high degree of education can no longer be a stepping stone to enter a hot enterprise. Thus, more and more graduate students choose to go out of school for individual internships. However, the graduate training program does not set internship as a compulsory link for graduates, nor does it require credits. Therefore, for most master's students, the individual internship is based on the strong practical needs of job hunting when they graduate;on the other hand, they are facing institutional pressure from their supervisors and school environment.Specifically,in the process of individual internship, the company does not pay interns formal wages corresponding to their labor results, nor does it pay social security for them.Consequently, interns as workers lack effective wage incentives and welfare guarantees.Using qualitative research method, this paper collects 19 graduate students with different professional backgrounds who are engaged in individual internship during their postgraduate studies through in-depth interviews. The reasons for their choice of individual internship are analyzed concretely from two aspects of subjectivity and structure, this paper holds that the formation of independent practice is closely related to the structural changes of the labor market.Since the transformation of China into a market economy and with the transition of the employment system of college graduates from a "unified distribution" to "self-employment",the intern form of college students has also developed from a unified arrangement under administrative instructions to an individual internship.Based on that, this paper discussed how enterprises can motivate interns to work hard in the absence of effective wage incentives and welfare guarantees, and revealed the coping strategies of interns under the dual pressures brought by the two identities of "enterprise staff" and "school students".Through the analysis of the field survey data, this paper finds that the labor control of the interns mainly includes four different forms: simple control, emotional management, reward and punishment mechanism and responsible autonomy.Interns develop action strategies such as time division, selective coping, collusion and concealment, and initiative exit to deal with the company's labor control and institutional pressure from the supervisor and school.
