In addition to causing physical disability, alcohol dependence may also increase poverty, reduce work efficiency, lead to domestic violence, etc.,and bring enormous health and economic burdens to the whole society. But the current medical and psychological interventions for alcohol dependence are extremely limited. In this context,Alcoholics Anonymous was introduced into China mainland as a self-help organization for alcohol-dependent patients, and played a significant role in the control of patients' addictive behavior. In this paper,we use the literature research, participatory observation and semi-structured interviews to collect more sufficient first-hand experience materials.Under the guidance of the field theory,we explore the internal practice mechanism of the self-help organization Alcoholics Anonymous(AA).As for the practical significance of the research, this article explores how alcoholics control addiction behaviors through self-help organizations, which will undoubtedly enlighten us how to better intervene other types of addiction groups. As to the theoretical significance of the research,on the basis of empirical data analysis, the concepts of negative adaptation and abnormal habitus are proposed,in order to modify and innovate the field theory to some extent. This paper reviews the complete life course of alcoholics from alcoholism to abstinence. On the surface, alcoholics participate in a close network of alcoholics through meetings, telephone conversations, and other methods, providing solid social and psychological support for alcohol control. Moreover, from a deeper level, considering the essence of alcohol abuse habitus is a kind of escaping temperament tendency resulting from the long-term failure of role conversion, the greatest significance of AA to alcoholics is to help them to get rid of the terrible situation.Although AA cannot directly change the objective situation of alcoholics, through the appeal of “spiritual growth”,members have continuously internalized and absorbed a new perception, judgment and action pattern in the process of practicing AA affairs, such as accept / change, rational / irrational. The new pattern can enable the alcoholics to cope with life setbacks including role conversion failure, providing them with a new lifestyle named "conscious life".The essence of the transformation of alcohol abuse habitus is the transformation of the pattern. At last, although AA does help numbers of alcoholics to control the addiction behaviors,we still should wisely realize that the so-called "conscious life" is just a ration myth.
