Research On Electronic Games From The Perspective Of Gender And Communication

Electronic game has become one of the powerful mass media,which is shaping the public's gender concept and cognition.This study will use narrative analysis to find out the gender concept spread by electronic games.And combining with the gender study in the cultural analysis to dig deep into the female consciousness and stereotypes in electronic games.Finally,it will be placed under the context of culture and society to examine the reasons and countermeasures of gender stereotypes.Through text analysis and content analysis,the study found that there is an unbalanced gender relationship in game narrative.In the story of narrative,women present negative media stereotypes passively,either as male subsidiaries,or sexual visual symbols carrying male desires,or female heroes consolidating male chauvinism order.However,with the expansion of female players,the male-centered industrial structure is being rewritten.The gender concept spread by electronic games is showing two sides.On the one hand,women are getting rid of their subordinate status gradually,rebelling against gender culture and demonstrating diversity.Furthermore,they are acquiring the subjective status of the narrative discourse and has the subjective consciousness of active viewing and self-interpretation.On the other hand,male gaze and gender constraint still exist,female players and characters are still the double victims of gender stereotypes.This study points out the reasons for the above contradictions.Firstly,male gaze and the fascination of the consumer society for female body images,resulting in the obsession of electronic games for women's sexy body.Secondly,under the discipline of gender,female players are always limited by their gender roles.Finally,based on the gender division of labor and other reasons,the male-dominated reality of game production cannot be changed in the short term.In summary,in order to make the equal gender concepts spread by electronic games come true,it is necessary to change the narrative construction in micro-level,the game ecology in middle-level and the social concept in macro-level.
