With the high-speed economic development in China, the number of single mother families has been increasing, which caused many social problems and attracted wide concern. In China, single mother families are generally facing economic pressures and easily being poor. Many studies have found that effective national welfare policies can play a role in alleviating the economic problems of single mother families. However,in countries with limited budgets, such as the United States,Japan and China, where social welfare policies are very limited, support from families, especially intergeneration co-residence,may become an effective choice to solve the problem. As a reason of Chinese traditional culture, single mother families in urban China adopt the mode of intergeneration co-residence easily, and this living arrangement choice now has came to a considerable scale.Till now,it is theoretical and practical important to focus on the intergenerational impact on the family economy of single mothers.Based on the theory of social exchange, and from the perspective of intergenerational relations, this paper makes hypothesis that intergeneration co-residence has a positive impact on the economy of single mother families. This paper uses multiple logistic regression models, samples of single-parent families in(CHFS 2015)to exam. This paper finds that 58% of the sample urban single mother families live with their parents. And the sample families with intergeneration co-residence live below poverty line less. The results also show that intergeneration co-residence has a significant impact on the economy of sample single-parent families, and the impact is positive.By comparing the results of this study with previous documents of the United States and Japan,we found that the result is consistent in three countries: intergeneration co-residence However, significant effects of different control variables are different, due to the differences of data sources, calculation criteria and analysis models adopted in various literatures.Based on this research, this paper proposes some policy suggestions for the government and welfare institutions, which provide social support for urban single-mother families, and social organizations, which provide non-material support for urban single-mother families. |
