A Study Of Metaphors In Football Match Commentary

Language,as a unique tool of information transmission in human society,has been studied and discussed by many scholars from ancient times to today.Linguistics in the modern sense was born in the early 18 th century.The emergence of historical comparative linguistics marks that linguistics has become an independent subject and started to enter the historical stage.Language cannot exist in isolation.As a carrier of human beings,it will inevitably be closely linked with human activities.On this basis,linguistics has further developed,forming a branch of linguistics represented by cognitive linguistics,anthropolinguistics,comparative linguistics,and at the same time,linguistics combines with the reality of life,forming micro-disciplines such as computer linguistics,pathological linguistics,neurolinguistics,and sociolinguistics,which has been widely studied in recent years.This paper is based on the theory of cognitive linguistics to study the metaphorical phenomenon in football game commentary.There are a lot of metaphorical expressions in sports game,especially in football.Live commentary,as a dynamic way of news dissemination,requires more stringent information dissemination for matches.It needs not only to transmit the dynamic information of the stadium to the audience,but it should also to be vivid and infectious.On this basis,there will be a large number of metaphorical terms in football game commentary.With this as a reference,this paper transcribes and records the on-the-spot comments on some important matches in the 2018 Russian World Cup,and establishes a corpus of metaphor research on the basis of cognitive linguistics.The corpus is analyzed and collated from the aspects of the relationship between football game and metaphor,the types of metaphor and the role of metaphor.The purpose of this paper is to elaborate the necessity and importance of metaphor in football commentary.The structure and content of this paper are as follows:The first chapter mainly elaborates the basis,value and source of corpus of this study,introduces the achievements and problems of previous studies,as well as the theoretical basis of this paper.The second chapter,as the core part of this paper,mainly through the collection and arrangement of specific metaphors,summarizes the specific types and quantity distribution of metaphors,as well as the role of each metaphor.Through summarizing and sorting out,this paper finds that there are 626 metaphors in the three competitions,including war metaphor,theater metaphor,drama metaphor,character metaphor,object metaphor and other metaphors.The third chapter mainly analyzes the function of metaphor in the explanation of football match.Through the analysis,we can see that metaphor includes two functions,namely rhetoric function or explicit function,including rendering,interest and image.At the same time,there are three implicit functions or social functions,including promoting sports spirit,enhancing collective consciousness and education function.The fourth chapter is mainly based on the above analysis,sorting out the potential drawbacks of the extensive use of metaphors in football match commentary.Through the analysis,we can see that there are three disadvantages in this paper: aesthetic fatigue,language violence and cultural barriers.The fifth chapter summarizes the whole paper and clarifies the purpose of this study.
