Objective:In this study, experiment method was used to explore the effects of HIIT on brain executive function of adolescents, and a comparison with MICT was performed which provides theoretical support for exercise and cognitive health.Research methods:In this study,12-14 years old middle school students were recruited according to the inclusion criteria and exclusion criteria, and the samples were randomly divided into the HIIT group (n=14),MICT group (n=12) and the control group (n=12).While all the participants received routine PE lessons one time a week, the HIIT group and MICT group jointed a 8-week high-intensity interval training and moderate-intensity aerobic exercise after class, respectively, which is performed 3 times per week. Before and after the training, all the subjects were tested for body composition, aerobic fitness, serum BDNF,Stroop performance, and brain oxygen dynamics collected by the functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS).SPSS 22.0 software was used to analyze the data collected in this study.T-test was used to analyze data from each group before and after intervention, the significance was set at P <0.05.The independent sample t test was used in the comparison between groups, with P <0.05 indicating the significance.Research results:(1) After 8-week intervention, the absolute V02max in HIIT and MICT group were significantly increased compared with pre-intervention (P <0.01)while no significant changes were observed in the C group. And the absolute V02max in HIIT and MICT group was significantly higher than C group (P <0.01 or P<0.05).The relative V02max in HIIT and MICT were also significantly enhanced compared with pre-intervention (P <0.01),the relative V02max in C group was still not changed. And the relative V02max in HIIT and MICT group was significantly higher than C group (P <0.01 or P<0.05).In addition,no significant difference between HIIT and MICT group(2) After 8-week intervention, serum BDNF level decreased in HIIT and MICT with significance in HIIT group (P <0.05).In addition,no significant changes were observed between HIIT and MICT group.(3) After 8-week intervention,Stroop performance in HIIT and MICT group were significantly improved indicated by reduced reaction time in Stroop color and word test (P <0.05).Although reaction time for HIIT group was shorter than MICT,no significance was observed. In addition, accuracy was significantly improved in HIIT and MICT groups (P <0.05) while there was no difference between HIIT and MICT group.(4)) After 8-week intervention, compared with pre-test,the 02-Hb values was significantly decreased in HIIT and MICT group (P <0.05),while no changes were observed in other region of Interests (ROIs);and there's no significant difference between HIIT and MICT in all ROIs.Conclusion:8-week high-intensity interval training can efficiently increase the aerobic fitness, brain executive function of 12-14y adolescents, which is associated with higher activation of DLPFC and the improvement of brain executive function is not always consistent with the level of serum BDNF.
