Number sense refers to the intuition about numbers(quantities).Specifically, children with strong sense of numbers can understand numbers and their various relationships, can compare the relative sizes of numbers, can successfully operate numbers, and can find corresponding indicators for the number and size that need to be represented.According to the development stage of number sense,it is divided into three stages: approximate number sense, early number sense, and mature number sense. The study found that early number sense can predict students' future mathematics performance and the learning of children with mathematical difficulties. It is an important predictor of school mathematics performance. Therefore, researchers are very concerned about the early number sense and its relationship with mathematical achievement.Approximate number sense is the basis of early number sense. On the basis of attention to early number sense, researchers have also begun to pay attention to the relationship between approximate number sense and mathematics academic performance. The study found that children's non-symbol processing and sign processing within the range of subitizing(1-4)have a vertical two-way relationship, which shows that subitizing are also related to mathematical performance. The so-called subitizing refers to the ability of people to perceive and report the number of small(1-4)objects quickly and accurately. This is an innate ability of humans and animals, and it is also one of the important branches in the field of number sense. So,whether the ability to subitizing can affect children's more advanced mathematical ability is the focus of this study. The study selects students in grades 3-6 of elementary school, and asks the subjects to complete the task of subitizing(sequence lattice recognition, separation of lattice contrast),general cognition(intelligence, attention, memory)tasks and math(calculation, application)tasks.Investigate the relationship between subitizing and general cognitive ability, advanced mathematical ability, and mathematical performance. All experiments were collectively tested on a multi-dimensional psychological platform developed by Beijing Normal University. The test selects the gradual occurrence paradigm of subitizing and the contrast paradigm of subitizing as independent variables. The simple addition calculation, simple number calculation(subtraction within 20),complex subtraction calculation,multi-step calculation(unit number),and application test are used as the student's mathematical results. That is to say,the dependent variables were selected as Raven's reasoning test, visual tracking test, and visual short-term memory as intermediate variables. For the data results,we first analyzed the overall level of primary school students' performance in each task, and then further analyzed the relationship between subitizing and general cognitive ability, advanced mathematical ability(computational ability, problem solving ability),and mathematical performance. Finally, the quantitative discrimination ability of subitizing range and non-subitizing range further analyzes the predictive effect of the two on mathematical performance.Through research, the following conclusions are reached:1.Elementary school students have the ability to subitizing and quantitative discrimination.2.Elementary school students' subitizing ability is significantly related to general cognitive ability(including intelligence,attention,memory).3.Elementary school students' ability to subitizing is significantly related to math performance.4.The quantitative discrimination ability of subitizing range and non-subitizing range is related to math performance, which can significantly predict the math performance of primary school students.
