The 1992 Constitution of Ghana guarantees Free and Compulsory Basic Education to every child of school going age irrespective of gender,religion,ethnicity or geographical location however,this is far from reality as some children in Ghana lack education especially the girl child.Hence the specific objectives of the study focused on investigating the interest and attitude of female students,parental consciousness and involvement in the girl child's education,the socio cultural and economic factors that affect the girl child education in the Ashaiman Municipality in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana and the intervention measures specifically to improve girl education in the area.A sample size of six hundred(600)respondents comprising female students and educational stakeholders participated in the study.This study employed both quantitative and qualitative research methods where questionnaires and interviews were used for the data collection.The study also utilized the multistage sampling and the purposive sampling methods for the selection of the respondents.The analysis of the data was done using Descriptive statistics,Independent Sample T-Test,the Logistics Regression and the Thematic Analysis(qualitative)using the Microsoft Excel and Statistical Package for Social Sciences(SPSS version 20.0).The findings from the study emphasized that a greater proportion of female students in the municipality are interested in education and show a positive attitude towards teaching and learning in their various schools.The result also showed that there was no statistical significant differences between female student in basic and senior high schools in terms of their attitudes and interest towards teaching and learning activities.It emerged from the study that there was a growing consciousness of parents and guardians about their girl child education.Findings from the study confirm some demographic,economic and sociocultural factors such household size,income level of household,and migration significantly influence the girl child education of in the municipality.Intervention measures such as awareness creation,provision of financial resources and adequate teaching and learning materials,eliminating of retrogressive cultural practices,among others have been proposed.The findings of this study has theoretical,empirical and policy contributions to shape future policies and research on girl child education.
