Research On The Propagation Path And Social Emotional Motivation Of The "MiTu" Events In China

The "MiTu" events is a collective sexual harassment report on Chinese social media.It began in January 2018 when Rosie reported Chen Xiaowu's case and triggered social networking in July.This is the first time that Chinese society has exposed and discussed sexual harassment on such a large scale in open cyberspace.This paper focuses on the “MiTu” events on the Chinese network,uses the methods of participatory observation,text analysis and grounded theory to analyze the unique communication motivation and mode of “MiTu” events in China's national conditions from the perspective of communication,and explains the reasons why “MiTu” events has aroused widespread participation and concern,as well as the hidden dangers of this mode of communication.In the light of the results of the study,the author gives personal opinions on how the government,social institutions and the media deal with and guide such social movements on privacy-sensitive topics.The study finds that the domestic “MiTu” events takes the development and breakthroughs of individual cases as its main manifestation.The role of previous cases as an example is an important motivation for subsequent whistleblowers to participate.The “MiTu” events in the whole cyberspace begins with discussing typical cases and eventually gradually fades away with individualization.Despite the participation of some opinion leaders in this process,the whole movement has no actual leaders,and there is no common programme of action and agreement between the whistleblowers.Most of their appeals are only for the resolution of individual cases and the elimination of their sense of humiliation,which makes the “MiTu” events unpredictable and unable to form a unified goal and appeal for action.At the same time,this initiative to reveal privacy in the social media also makes victims have to face secondary harm from the Internet,and the imperfection of the law also makes the whistleblowers only subject to moral condemnation and punishment,which also leads to the “MiTu” events being questioned and criticized.Therefore,in order to promote the establishment of anti-sexual harassment laws and systems in society,not only the courage of victims to stand up for "MeToo",but also the practical action of the legislative and law enforcement departments of the government and the participation and attention of the media are needed.
