The group reference effect refers to the effect that people remember the information of their own group better than that of other groups. Each person will belong to many different groups and have different identities. The group to which the individual belongs and the corresponding social and cultural background will have varying degrees of influence on it.Researchers refer to the individual's sense of identity with a group or culture as Cultural identity. When individuals activate their specific identities, they often perceive the world based on a specific identity framework.Stryker refers to the possibility that such individuals initiate specific identities in social contexts as identity salientity.Yang et al.Found that identity salience can affect the group reference effect and promote individual memory. But whether it can improve the memory effect of the group reference effect and make it similar to the memory effect of the self-reference effect. The current research is from the perspective of different mainstream cultures, and fewer groups of different subcultures explore the group reference effect. Therefore, this study highlights the individual's identity from the perspective of subculture, and explores whether to highlight the individual's identity can improve the individual's group reference effect and achieve a memory effect similar to the self-reference effect. This study includes two experiments. From the perspective of social situation, experiment one highlights the identity of the individual, selects southerners who belong to a minority in the north as the prominent identity, and northerners as the non-prominent identity.104 adjectives were judged under the four conditions of inner group and outer group, and free recall after distracting experiment. The experimental results found that the memory effect of the group reference task that highlights the identity is not significantly different from the memory effect of the self-reference task, but there is a significant difference between the memory effect of the two when the identity is not highlighted. In the second experiment, the method of starting was adopted, and the method of starting was adopted for the southerners to highlight the identity of the southerners. The northerners served as the control group without starting. In the learning phase, the subjects were required to make judgments under four conditions. After the distraction experiment,104 words and 104 new words in the learning phase were mixed. It proves that there is no significant difference between the memory effect of the group reference task that highlights the identity and the memory effect of the self-reference effect. The above experimental results show that identity saliency can promote the group reference effect to achieve a memory effect similar to the self-reference effect.
