In recent years, economic globalization has become the most significant mark of the times. The acceleration of the globalization process not only affects the economic and political aspects, but also makes the traditional, rigid, closed and highly unified cultural ecology no longer exist. It has been an unavoidable reality that the imbalance of cultural exchanges between countries, which even caused a series of problems of identity crisis and civic education. In addition, the international division of labor and cooperation, brought about by globalization, requires more human capital with the ability of international exchange and cooperation. These changes put forward new requirements for higher education—realizing higher education internationalization. In this context,it has become an important goal for talent training in developed countries that cultivating "Global Competence" of students, that is,cultivate innovative talents with more international competitiveness and cross-cultural leadership. However, the international exchange programs of universities serve as a direct window to perceive foreign cultures,so how does the international exchange experience of students gained by participating in the program affect global competence?Based on this background,395 college students who participated in the international exchange project of Nanjing University were taken as the research object, and their participation in the international exchange project was investigated through questionnaire surveys. At the same time, based on the localized global competency model released by Tsinghua University,a global competency table for Chinese students was compiled, and the global competencies and all dimensions abilities of the survey respondents were evaluated to explore the influence mechanism of international exchange experience on global competence.According to the text analysis of 15 undergraduates participated in the questionnaire and 484 communication experiences published on the international website, enriching the interpretation space of data results to some extent and discovering the problems in the operation of international exchange projects.Subsequently, the implementation effect of Nanjing University's international exchange and cooperation project was improved, and it is expected to inspire the improvement of the international education level of Nanjing University.Through questionnaire surveys, qualitative interviews, and text analysis, the main findings of this study are as follows: 1.The global competence of undergraduates with international communication experience is generally better, but there is an imbalance in the development of various dimensions: the development of undergraduates' dimensions of culture and responsibility & intercultural interpersonal communication is better, but as for the cognitive and skills dimensions, students have poorer performance;2.The duration of international exchanges has a weak effect on the global competence of undergraduates;3.International exchange project participation has a significant effect on the improvement of global competence and the ability in all dimensions;4.Individual background traits, international participation in the school, and international exchange experience have varying degrees of impact on all dimensions of global competence:: the impact of international participation in the school on the cognitive and skills dimensions is greater than the participation in international exchange projects;the cultural and responsibility dimensions are affected by the experience of international exchanges, but the impact is weak, and the influencing factors need to be further explored; In the dimension of intercultural interpersonal communication, cultural adaptation has the most significant positive impact on it.5.The overall project satisfaction of undergraduates is high, but there are still problems in project management. In response to the above findings, combined with literature review, the study uses social comparison theory to make discussions and explanations. From these, the study gained three inspirations and suggestions: 1.At the school level,we must establish exchanges and cooperation with more foreign universities or institutions in different regions. In addition,we must integrate the concept of internationalization into teaching activities and attach importance to the school.International training;2.At the project management level, relevant management departments should pay attention to the communication and guidance of the project, update and improve the information, optimize the project process management and evaluation feedback mechanism, and strive to improve the quality of the project;3.At the student development level,it is necessary to establish a global sense, enhance the sense of national responsibility, reduce utilitarian demands in participation in international exchange projects, and focus on internal growth. Finally, this paper analyzes the shortcomings of the research, such as sample selection sources are insufficient, students' international exchange experiences need further investigating, the factors affecting global competence especially the dimension of culture and responsibility, which need to be further explored.Meanwhile, further research has been proposed at the end of the paper.
