How to improve the total factor productivity of manufacturing industry and promote the sustainable growth of regional macro-economy is not only a realistic problem, but also a hot topic in the field of economic research.Total factor productivity is measured as the main indicator of technological improvement driven by innovation. The increase of total factor productivity of regional manufacturing industry depends not only on regional technological innovation, but also on the spillover of technological innovation in associated economies.Geographical distance is regarded as an important factor affecting technology spillover between regions. Some scholars have combined economics and geography and found that proximity in geographical space helps to reduce the cost of technology sharing and transaction. In addition, some scholars have found that the similarity of regional industry structure and technology plays an important role in the spillovers of regional technology. However, the research on the total factor productivity of regional manufacturing industry in China often ignores the impact of multi-dimensional spillover effect on the total factor productivity.Studying the spillover effect of a single proximity on total factor productivity will overestimate the effect of proximity, because it is unable to identify and distinguish the spillover effect of multi-dimensional proximity.Based on the existing literature,we use spatial lag model and 2004-2013 Chinese Industrial Enterprises Database to study the spillover effect of technology, structure and geographical proximity on manufacturing total factor productivity in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. The results show that the total factor productivity of manufacturing industry in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region is strongly spatially dependent on the adjacent areas. The spillover effect of geographical proximity, technology proximity and their interaction can promote regional TFP growth of manufacturing industry significantly. But the spillover effect of structure proximity is not significant. In addition, geographical proximity and structure proximity show strong complementary effects. However, although there is a significant positive spillover effect on total factor productivity among the interactions of geographical and technology proximity and structure and technology proximity, there is no significant complementary or substitution effect.Synthesizing the above theoretical analysis andempirical test,we suggest how to adjust the manufacturing industry layout and improve the total factor productivity level in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region in the future. At the end of this paper, the prospect of future research is put forward.
