This dissertation consists of two chapters: the first chapter reviews the chemical constituents and pharmacological activities of Euphorbia helioscopia L.and Euphorbia tirucalli L.;the second charpter describes the chemical constituents and their cytotoxicities.Euphorbia tirucalli L.,belonging to the genus Euphorbia,is used for the treatment of diseases such as impotence,wart,epilepsy,toothache,hemorrhoids and cough,etc.In order to recognize the foundation of bioactive compounds and take comprehensive utilization of this plant,we have reseached on the chemical constituents and antitumor activities of tirucalli.The air-dried and powdered aerial parts of Euphorbia tirucalli L.were extracted by 95% ethanol.After evaporation under reduced pressure,a dark ethanol extract was obtained.The extract was mixed with water and extracted by petroleum ether,ethyl acetate,and n-butanol,respectively.Each fraction was subjected to column chromatography over normal and reversed-phase silica gel,sephadex LH-20,preparation thin-layer chromatography,and recrystallization repeatedly to obtain 18 compounds.Their chemical structures were established on the basis of extensive spectroscopic techniques including 1D-,2D-NMR,IR,MS analysis and by the comparison with spectroscopic data reported in the literature.The test on cytotoxic activities of petroleum ether fraction and some compounds from Euphorbia tirucalli had been taken.The investigation on the constituents of Euphorbia tirucalli L.led to the isolation of eighteen compounds: lanosterol(1),3-epi-glutinol(2),oleana-9(11),12-dien-3-one(3),?-amyrenone(4),olean-12-en-3-one(5),friedelin(6),(24S)-stigmasteral-4-en-3-one(7),?-sitosterol(8),?-daucosterol(9),kaempferol 3-O-?-L-rhamnoside(10),gallic acid(11),1-(2,4,6-trimeth-oxyphenyl)ethanone(12),scopoletin(13),syringaldehyde(14),4-deoxy(4?)-phorbol(15),ent-(3?,13S)-3,13-dihydroxyatis-16-en-14-one(16),engyolone(17),and isololiolide(18).Among them,compound 15 is the first reported as a natural product,and compounds 2-7,10,12-18 are isolated from this plant for the first time.The petroleum ether extract and some compounds were evaluated for their cytotoxicity against K562,A549,and BEL-7402 cell lines.Compounds 1,3,7 showed weak cytotoxic activities against K562 cell line,and 1 exhibited weak bioactivity aginst A549 cell line.
