Poly-crystalline zinc sulfide is one of the important infrared transmission materials in the infrared detection and imaging system. It is widely used in the infrared imaging guidance system and infrared window materials. There are almost no reports on the preparation of poly-crystalline zinc sulfide by high temperature and high pressure method.Poly-crystalline zinc sulfide prepared by high temperature and high pressure method(HPHT-ZnS)have excellent mechanical and optical property compared with poly-crystalline CVD-ZnS and HP-ZnS.As a new subject, our research provides a good help for the further synthesis of high performance zinc sulfide polymorphism. In this paper, with sulfur powder and zinc powder as raw materials, the poly-crystalline zinc sulfide has been synthesized by high temperature and high pressure method in the range of 800 ? to 1000 ? under 2.0 GPa condition. It is found that the crystal is a face-centered cubic structure, and the infrared transmittance of the sample increases with the increase of temperature. With pure sulfide zinc powder as raw material, the poly-crystalline zinc sulfide has been prepared by using solid phase sintering principle under 2.0 GPa condition. The result shows that the density and hardness of the poly-crystalline zinc sulfide increases with the increase of temperature. However, the infrared transmittance first increases and then decreases with the increase of temperature, and the infrared transmittance is up to 55% at 900?.Solid phase sintering method is superior to reactive sintering method in density, hardness and light transmittance.
