Aramid ? fiber is a new type of heterocyclic high-performance fiber with high strength,high modulus and high temperature resistance.It is mainly used in military area,aerospace filed and personal protection domain.However,the aramid ? fiber has a distinct sheath-core structure,highly crystalline,a strong steric hindrance effect because of the benzene ring of the skeleton structure,and the weak intermolecular lateral force,which lead to the overall mechanical properties of the fiber decreased when the force is applied.Aramid ? fiber is hardly to sizing because its surface is chemically inert and its resin has poor wettability.In addition,the unmodified aramid? has a strength of 23 cN/dtex,which is unable to meet the needs of acting as a raw material for the preparation of bulletproof UD cloth and can barely satisfy the parameter requirements for stab-resistant equipment.Therefore,it has great significance to develop a slurry which can improve the strength of the aramid ? fiber and the stab resistance of the fabric.Considering the above problems,in order to deeply improve the tensile strength and fabric stab resistance,this paper proposed a method of modifying the surface of aramid fiber with water-based resin slurry coating to improve the wetting of the resin on the surface of the fiber,enhance the fiber bundle.Improving the tensile breaking strength of the aramid ? fiber is our first target.Firstly a suitable slurry monomer with higher performance was selected,then an emulsifier and a water-soluble polymer auxiliary agent were added to prepare a compounded slurry.The optimum aramid ? fiber reinforced slurry was preferably selected by testing and analyzing the stability of the slurry,the particle size,the surface tension,the contact angle,and the breaking strength of the fiber.The thermal stability and structural properties of the preferred optimal slurry were analyzed using a thermogravimetric analyzer and an infrared spectrum.Secondly,the surface of the aramid ? fiber was modified by a preferred slurry,and the effects of different sizing rates on the tensile strength of the aramid ? fiber were investigated.The morphology and structure of aramid ? fiber before and after sizing were characterized by SEM,IR and XPS.The results showed that the surface morphology of aramid ? changed after slurry sizing treatment;the fiber strength increased obviously after slurry treatment.When the sizing rate was 3%,the average tensile strength of the fiber increased to 28.25 cN/dtex,which increased by 14.16%compared with the original silk.Finally,the modified aramid plain fabric was modified by the preferred slurry.The puncture resistance of the modified aramid fabric was evaluated by surface morphology characterized by SEM,fabric stretching and stab resistance characterized by universal testing machine.In order to further study the performance of the treated aramid fabric,its breaking force and puncture strength for different tools was investigated.The results showed that the slurry layer can resist impact and buffer.Compared with the untreated fabric,when the sizing amount was 10 wt%,the average tensile strength of the fabric was increased by 127%and the average static piercing force of the razor was increased by 104%.Moreover,the cone puncture strength increased to 4.1 times and the average burst strength increased to 13 times.
