Pulse power technology has a wide range of applications in the defense and civilian fields.Gas switches are a key component of pulsed power sources.At present,the development direction of pulse power technology is developed from the pursuit of single pulse power source with high peak power to the power synthesis technology of multiple pulse power systems.This imposes higher requirements on the performance of switching components.A certain amount of pulse power,repetition frequency,and time jitter are within the range of operation,and it also has a high requirement for the size and operation stability of the switching device.It is important to study the breakdown characteristics and jitter characteristics of small size field distortion spark gap gas switches for the research of compact low jitter repetitive frequency pulsed power sources.This paper first introduces the basic theory of gas discharge and breakdown mechanism of field distortion switch.Focused on the factors that affect the gas switching repetition frequency,and introduced the gas insulation recovery process.At the same time,theoretically analyzed the ablation mechanism of the switch electrode,and proposed measures to reduce the ablation of the switch.Through theoretical analysis and simulation,the causes of the gas switch jitter are given,which provides a theoretical basis for the design and experimental study of the gas switch.A small size field distortion spark gas switch was designed and developed.In order to reduce the structural inductance of the gas switch and improve the operating characteristics of the gas switch,the main electrode is designed as a circular track structure;at the same time,in order to increase the stability of the gas switch operation and reduce the self-breakdown probability,the trigger electrode is designed as a disk-shaped structure;In order to improve the breakdown characteristics and stability during the switch conduction,a circular hole is added in the middle of the disk trigger disk.This type of gas switch has a small size(?150mm×42mm),light weight(about 1.5kg),high withstand voltage(greater than 120kV),and stable operation for a long time under repeated frequency conditions.The breakdown characteristics,trigger characteristics,repetition frequency characteristics and stability of the small size field distortion spark gas switch were experimentally studied.The self-breakdown test result of the switch without trigger pulse shows that there are large differences between the self-breakdown voltages of different gases.As the gas pressure increases,the self-breakdown voltage of the switch will also increase,and the two are approximately in a linear relationship;The chamber was filled with different gases to trigger experiments.The results show that the switch has better breakdown performance in the mixed gas of N2 and SF6-N2,and the breakdown time and jitter of different gases at high working coefficient are small.By varying the trigger pulse frequency,the switch was tested with different repetition frequencies.The results showed that the switch can work stably at the repetition frequency of 1Hz-50Hz,but the switching stability is greatly reduced when the repetition frequency is higher than 100Hz.By changing the front edge and peak voltage of the trigger pulse,it is found that the trigger pulse has a great influence on the stability of the switch.The trigger pulse with a fast front edge and a high peak voltage can effectively reduce the switching jitter and improve the stability of the switching operation.By measuring the breakdown delay of different gaps of the field distortion switch respectively,it is found that the jitter of different gaps of the field distortion switch is affected by different factors,among which the change of the trigger pulse mainly affects the jitter of the first breakdown breakdown(or gap 1)of the field distortion switch.The change in the work factor mainly affects the jitter of the switch's subsequent breakdown gap(or gap 2).
