Port plays an important role in national economy and plays a strong role in promoting regional economic development. The port plays an important role in the transportation of bulk cargo, the promotion of national economy, the improvement of peopleundefineds travel mode and the improvement of Chinaundefineds comprehensive strength in the world.More than 90%of Chinaundefineds foreign trade goods are imported and exported through ports. The importance of port economic development to the development of our national economy is self-evident.The Yangtze River Delta is the plain area of the estuary of the Yangtze River, and it is the most powerful area of Chinaundefineds comprehensive economic strength. It is called the largest economic zone, and it is also the core source of power for Chinaundefineds economic development positioned by the central government. The Yangtze River Delta area also has the strength in the trade aspect, this region has the solid industrial foundation, the advanced production technology condition, the strong development momentum,in our country foreign trade export aspect first. The ports located in the Yangtze River Delta play an important role in promoting the horizontal integration and vertical development of the economy. Therefore,it is necessary to pay more attention to the role of ports in the development of a region,to make full use of port resources, and to make a reasonable division of labor among the ports in the Yangtze River Delta region,so as to maximize the benefit of the ports.According to the actual situation of the ports and the evaluation and analysis of the competitiveness of the major ports in the Yangtze River Delta region, this paper puts forward some suggestions for the improvement of the competitiveness of the major ports in the Yangtze River Delta.Firstly, this paper introduces the basic concepts and theoretical basis of port, and summarizes the research status of domestic and foreign scholars. Then, taking Ningbo-Zhoushan Port,Shanghai Port,Lianyungang Port,Nanjing Port and Yangzhou Port as the research objects, this paper briefly expounds the basic situation and function orientation of the five ports.Through the study of the existing literature, this paper summarizes the factors affecting the competitiveness of the port in five aspects: geographical location and natural conditions, production and management capacity, economic conditions in the hinterland of the port, port financial situation, and port development potential.Strictly following the principle of the establishment of the index system and combining with the actual development of the port, this paper constructs the evaluation index system of port competitiveness, which is composed of five first-level indicators: operation scale, infrastructure, hinterland environment, port developmentpotential and financial status.Through factor analysis, the index of port competitiveness is synthesized, and the urban capacity factor, operation capability factor and development potential factor are extracted, and the port competitiveness is ranked according to the score. On this basis, the cluster analysis method is used to cluster the ports to determine the functional positioning of each port. Finally, according to the analysis of the evaluation conclusion, suggestions are given to enhance the competitiveness of the ports in the Yangtze River Delta region.
