The Historical Evolution, Protection And Utilization Of Dongshuiguan And Xishuiguan On Nanjing City Wall

As the capital of six dynasties and the capital of ten metropolis,Nanjing has profound cultural deposits and rich historical sites.The East Shuiguan and the West Shuiguan of Nanjing city wall are both important parts of Nanjing city wall,which have witnessed historical changes of the ancient Nanjing.What's more,they have great historical,artistic and scientific research value.According to relevant historical data,the construction of the East Shuiguan can be traced back to the construction period of Yangwu Dynasty.Its predecessor was the Upstream Watergate,which played the role of diverting the Qinhuai River during the Song and Yuan dynasties and temporarily controlled the water flow into the inner city.At the beginning of the Ming dynasty,it expanded into the East Shuiguan on the basis of the Upstream Watergate and became a well-functioning water conservancy facility with navigation and military defense functions.During the period of the Republic of China,the Nanjing municipal government carried out maintenance and renovation of the East Shuiguan for many times.In order to improve the urban water conservancy and solve the urban water use problem.The predecessor of the West Shuiguan is the Downstream Watergate,which was built at the same time as the Upstream Watergate.In addition,according to relevant documents,the famous sunchu restaurant was built on top of it,and there are scenic pavilions,egret pavilions,ershui pavilions,folding willow pavilions,wind pavilions,and beauty pavilions around the Downstream Watergate.At the beginning of Ming dynasty,the following water gate was built into the West Shuiguan.In the period of the Republic of China,in order to maintain and regulate the urban water conservancy,the Nanjing municipal government carried out the corresponding management and transformation of the West Shuiguan while renovating the East Shuiguan.At present,as most of the West Shuiguan buildings have been demolished,while the East Shuiguan buildings are relatively intact,there should be some differences in protection.There are some common problems in the exhibition and utilization of the East Shuiguan and the West Shuiguan.There are no in-depth interpretation of the two buildings,few research results and shallow exploration of tourism resources.Based on the field research and the previous research results,the author puts forward the following Suggestions for improvement: in terms of protection,East Shuiguan shouldadhere to the principle of authenticity,and strengthen the protection of its own buildings and the management of the surrounding environment.And the West Shuiguan can consider to rebuild,restore original historical appearance.In terms of exhibition,both of them can establish thematic exhibition halls or watergate cultural experience areas,and acquire various interpretation facilities to enrich the diversity of means of exposition.In terms of utilization,both of them can hold various activities to strengthen publicity,attaching importance to the development of tourism resources,giving a role model to the social education function of ancient architecture,and conform to the development of the current era.
