Objective Agriculture God's Canon of Materia Medica,as the "ancestor of traditional Chinese material medica books",plays a decisive role in the literature of herbal medicine, drug theory and clinical medication of later generations.Regretting the loss of the original book, the survivors are mainly the copies of the editions of the contents in the past dynasties' literature such as Classified Materia Medica and the annotations and explanations of the Ming and Qing dynasties. In the Qing Dynasty, under the interaction of political, economic, ideological and cultural factors, the trend of textual research prevailed and became a golden age of collection and annotation. This paper systematically sorts out the main compilation editions, annotations and notes of Herbal Classic, reviews the general situation of its development and presentation characteristics, tries to summarize the impact of the achievements of compiling lost books and annotations in the Qing Dynasty on the development of Chinese medicine in later generations, and provides some reference for the future study of Agriculture God's Canon of Materia Medica. Methods By consulting the original materials and existing research results of Agriculture God's Canon of Materia Medica and other related works, this topic summarizes the relevant research about when the book was completed and who was the author, analyses the reasons and characteristics of collecting lost in the Qing Dynasty. It sorts out the eight most important editions of the Chinese and Japanese Agriculture God's Canon of Materia Medica, describes the characteristics of each edition, and conducts a comparative study. The paper collates twelve Herbal Classic editions of annotations and explanations in the Qing Dynasty, and sums up the main development line of Agriculture God's Canon of Materia Medica after the Qing Dynasty. Results The topic involves the main factors and achievements of textual research and collection in the Qing Dynasty. In the aspect of compilation of Herbal Classic,it mainly discusses Guo Mengqi's Herbal Classic(1687),Sun Xingyan and Sun Fengyi's Agriculture God's Canon of Materia Medica(1799),Gu Guanguang's Agriculture God's Canon of Materia Medica(1844),Huang Shi's Agriculture God's Canon of Materia Medica(before 1853),Wang Kaiyun's Agriculture God's Canon of Materia Medica(1885),Jiang Guoyi's Shennong Herbal Classic(1892),there were six main compiled versions of Herbal Classic in Qing Dynasty,as well as two editions of Kariya Ekisai's Agriculture God's Canon of Materia Medica(1824)and Mori Tachiyuki's Agriculture God's Canon of Materia Medica(1854)in the same period in Japan. In terms of annotations, two editions of Wang Hong's Annotation Of Shen Nong's Herbal Classic(1885)and Mo Meishi's Collation Of Shen Nong's Herbal Classic(1900)are discussed. In terms of notes and commentaries, eight major domestic annotations, such as Zhang Zhicong's Ben Cao Chong Yuan(about 1663),Zhang Lu's Ben Jing Feng Yuan(1695),Yao Qiu's Essentials Of Herbal Classic(1724),Xu Dachun's One hundred Catalogues Of Shen Nong's Herbal Classic(1736),as well as two kinds of annotations of Japanese Suzuki Motoyuki's Annotation Of Shen Nong's Herbal Classic(about 1799-1816),Mori Tachiyuki's Textual Research of Herbal Classic(1858),are mainly described. Conclusion The collection and annotation of Agriculture God's Canon of Materia Medica in the Qing Dynasty have important literature value and practical value.Although there are many differences in style or content among various editions, and disparities in the academic level,it is of great significance to preserve the integrity of classical works and to enable later generations to have a more direct glimpse of the panorama of Agriculture God's Canon of Materia Medica.
