On The Choice Of Applying Translation Strategies

With the acceleration of globalization,translation is no longer limited in the literary field,but also involved in political,economic and cultural activities.Translation leaves its traces in all the areas where human being acts.As a practical translation,the pragmatic translation plays a considerable role in accelerating information transmission and promoting cultural exchange.Generally speaking,applied texts focus on the transmission of objective information and phenomenon of the real world,emphasizing the readability of the translation and the reader's acceptance and understanding.There are few rhetorics observed and the description of information respects a clear logic.The text may cover many professional terms and the word's meaning is relatively specific and stable,while whether translating it accurately relies on translator's professional knowledge.It is also one of the important references in the evaluation of translation and a big challenge to the translator.Translation strategy refers to the way of thinking,approach,methods and procedures during translation.The translation strategies' analysis and refinery give an effective direction in the translation practice.As a world famous military academy,Saint-Cyr Military Academy molds his image to the world with the brochure to introduce his educational conception and training system,which brings an effective and direct way for readers to understand.At the words' level,the text covers the terms in military and higher education field,and a large number of abbreviations.During the translation process,the translator should maintain high sensitivity to the professional language,try to find the corresponding translation with the help of professional knowledge and register,and select a proper translation strategy among literal translation,free translation,foreignization and domestication,etc.The translator should examine the translation accuracy in different ways to ensure its reliability.At the syntactic level,due to the differences between French and Chinese,the translator should consider readers' thinking habits,and select the translation strategies according to the length or the complexity of the sentences,such as following the original syntactic order,reinventing sentence structures,turning phrases into clauses,and applying various strategies flexibly.In the thesis,the author gives a review on the translation of Brochure of Saint-Cyr Military Academy from four chapters.In the first chapter,the author introduces the task of translation,including the background,the characteristics and difficulties of pragmatic translation based on text analysis,and the requirements of client.In the second chapter,the author presents a process which combines the translation preparation and the translation.The third chapter emphasizes the selection of translation strategy.The author introduces the translation strategies' guiding significance to the case analysis,then explains the selected translation strategy when translating military,higher education terms,and acronyms.Besides,three typical examples are presented to illustrate the translation strategy during the language transformation.The fourth chapter is a conclusion that the author summarizes the experience in translating Brochure of Saint-Cyr Military Academy and some points need to pay attention in the future.
