The Chinese school songs that emerged in the early twentieth century set a precedent for the compositions of new music.with the development of musical education in new-style schools and the popularity of school songs,western music theories were systematically propagated in China,and then modern music in China begun.The “May 4th new music movement ”launched by Youmei Xiao and Yuanren Zhao,and the anti-Japanese national liberation music movement & the left music and cultural movement by Zi Huang and Nie Er,were the beginning of Chinese music creation in the early stage,which was characterized as innovation based on the tradition.Xiaolin Tan was one of the many musical composors who explored new skills.The feature of his composition was while he borrowed the traditional western harmonic skills especially Hindemith's theory,he retained the national features of Chinese traditional music,western and eastern elements were mixed naturally and harmoniously in his music.The melody of Tan's songs was unique but easy to sing,the tunes were delicately flexible with pentatone,which made his songs full of national features as well as rich pantonality.This thesis takes Xiaolin Tan's “Spring Rain and Spring Breeze ”as the object of study,and intends to do a deep research on the historical background of this song's composition,musical analysis and singing-analysisof it.The intention of this thesis is to have a full understanding of Tan's “Spring Rain and Spring Breeze ”,so as to make full preparation for the performance of this song as well as to accumulate more experience about understanding musical theories and singing songs of the same time.
