Anton Leopold Dvorak's Eighth Symphony,op.88 in G major, was composed in 1889.It was premiered in Prague in February in the following year with Dvorak on the podium. This work has a strong Bohemia flavor amongst Dvorak's symphonis and is called by many as“a symphony which is like a symphonic poem”for it is somewhat“improvisational”.The main content of this thesis is the analysis of the 2nd movement of Dvorak's Eighth Symphony combined with a discussion on the performance video by conductors Mariss Jansons and Herbert von Karajan for the purpose of applying their technique in one's own conducting practice and to have a better insight of this movement on the macroscopic level. This thesis consists of three parts:the first part is the analysis of the main works of Dvorak and the form of the 2nd movement of the Eighth Symphony;the second part combines the comparative analysis of the conducting on the movement by Jansons and Karajan with highlights we can learn from;the third part is the summary and the author's view point of the inspiration from watching Jansons and Karajan's conducting with indepth discussion of overall interpretation on the work.I hope this thesis can be a direct reference for the readers and professional musicians and it will contribute in a small way to the development of the art of conducting.
