In the context of contemporary art, many artists try to find a common ground among art materials,to achieve cross-material practice.Since the advent of photography in the middle of the 19 th century, people believed that photography will eventually put an end to painting. It seems that photography and painting were placed on opposite. However, there are more and more artistic practices that span across photography and painting. This dissertation attempts to point out that the key element of cross-material practice between photography and painting is the schema. The photographer Wolfgang Tillmans and the painter Gerhard Richter are case studies that can be demonstrated, because they have already try the cross-material practice between photography and painting in different ways, but both of them have used with schematas. From their cross-material practice, the common schema of photography and painting can be applied in three ways: metaphor, composition, deconstruction and reorganization. The metaphor of schemata is to make an alternative depiction of things that seem to be irrelevant, but there are internal associations actually,by doing so,the works present different semantic effects. The composition of schemata organizes two or more schemas that are not directly related to each other, according to their own intentions or the themes of the work,in a new context, thus creating a new schema effect. The deconstruction and reorganization of schemata is an important way to give and reinforce the conceptual connotation of the works. It can be achieved by the figurative or abstract processing of the image itself or the organization of the images and the exhibition space. These three kinds of methods are also relative to the themes, materials, and the use of concrete and abstract. The first is to use the subject matter that people are familiar with to produce a semantic effect that is different from the usual experience through screen scheduling;secondly, the diversion and juxtaposition of different schemas,or through the integration of materials, resulting in a new effect of schema. Finally,to create new schema effects,is deconstructing images or the constructing spaces.
