Harald Szeemann(1933-2005)was called the first "independent curator." He curated the famous exhibition “When attitudes become form” that was considered as a signpost for contemporary exhibition planning.It was also from that time,he pushed the form of the exhibition to a new level and making the organization of exhibitions become a practice with spirit of critical and experimental.This article focuses on the growth of Szeemann and trying to explore how his unique curatorial ideas and working methods were formed from his early learning experience to his initial curatorial practice.The full text is divided into five parts and which are Szeemann's experience in schooling and theatrical performance,early curatorial practice,the curatorial of "When Attitudes Becomes Form",from "Happening and Fluxus" to "Individual Mythologies","The Museum of Obsessions" and several other components.Exploring what influenced Szeemann thoughts combined with such parts and the background of the post-war European era from the fifties to the seventies.From his choice of artists and the development of the theme of the exhibition to further analyzed his curatorial ideas.It is hoped that through the study of this article,we can take a look at the work of an independent curator and examine the exhibition planning of contemporary art,which will give rise to further reflections on our exhibition planing.
