Intuition and analysis both are important factors influencing the decision making. There is a debate on whether intuition is superior or inferior to analysis. To answer this question,a range of factors should be considered, such as the characteristics and difficulty of tasks, cognitive styles and so on.The research presented in this article will focus on the following issues:(1)Whether the relative advantage of intuition and analysis in decision making depends on the compatibility between thinking mode and task.(2)How intuition and analysis influence performance of intuitive tasks with different difficulties.(3)In this process, whether the experiential and rational cognitive styles have an influence on it.In study 1,the assessment of faces used for the intuitive task, and the evaluation of arithmetical multiplications was chosen for the analytical task.Using the different instructions and phrases below the stimuli as the manipulation of intuition and analysis, subjects in the control condition were asked to choose without any guidance and strategy tips. The results showed, the best performance on both tasks made in analysis, the control condition took second place, and the worst performance in intuition; In average reaction time of two tasks, the group in intuition performed fastest, the control group second, and the slowest group was people who guided to use analysis.Study 2 explored respectively in experiment 1 and 2 whether the experiential and rational cognitive styles have an influence on performances of tasks with different characteristics or intuitive tasks with different difficulties. The results in experiment 1 showed that the higher score in the rational cognitive style, the better performance of analytic task, and no association between two task performances and experiential cognitive style.Experiment 2 used respectively assessment of urban photographs and the assessment of faces as simple or complex intuitive task.It was found that no association between two task performances and experiential or rational cognitive style. In study 3,concurrent load task(dot memory)was used as the manipulation of intuition. In the analytical condition, participants were required to specify reasons before making their choice.Experiment 1 added the variable—cognitive styles on study 1,The results showed: the analysis processing under two task performances was superior to the intuitive processing which is consistent with the results in study1,in the process, there was no effect with experiential or rational cognitive style on task performances.Experiment 2,based on experiment 2 in sdudy2,manipulated individual cognitive processing, which investigated whether intuition, analysis and cognitive style has effect on performances of intuitive tasks with different difficulties. The results showed:on different intuition task performances, participants in condition of analysis performed better than who used intuition, and the effect with experiential or rational cognitive style was not significant.According to the results, the present conclusions are as follows:(1)In the performances of intuitive tasks including assessment of faces and urban photographs,or analytical task using the evaluation of arithmetical multiplications, analysis is superior to intuition.(2)Rational cognitive style has an impact on analytical task performance, but in the situation asking people to use analysis or intuition, the influence of rational cognitive style is weakened.
