Canadian literary critics Northrop Frye believes that all the arts have been formalized. However, compared with other art materials, the works that depict national leaders are characterized as more obvious schematization. As a symbol of national politics in a period, the images of outstanding leaders have become the one of the objects favoured by some artists.Although oil painting has a short history in China, representation and realistic oil paintings,to some extent, implied the concepts of“science”,”democracy”and“modern”and undertook the historic task of enlightenment and national salvation under the context of social culture and the concept of“realistic painting remakes Chinese paining”in 20thcentury.After 1949,with the influence of the external factors like national politics and art policies, oil paintings has closer linkage with politics. One of the symbols is more works expressing leaders images and shaping a representative leaders schematism. These schematisms are not only the outcome of the development of the art itself, but also the character shaping of national leaders and nation images under the influence of collective discourse in a certain period. This thesis attempts to analyze the holistic schematism characteristics of monumental leaders images on the basis of careful analysis of a large number of oil paintings and related documents since the foundation of China by the means of Gombrich's“schema corrective”theory and the document research, comparative study, and schematism analysis. And it explores the staging features and rules of development of the schematism of leaders images in oil paintings since the foundation of China through heteronomy--external influence and autonomy--self-development of schematisms. This thesis has five parts:The introduction makes a brief presentation of origin, situation and methods of the research. The first chapter”Schematisms in Paintings and Leaders Images”mainly introduces the schematism concept and“schema corrective”theory and briefly introduces the monumental characterstics of the schematism of leaders. The second chapter”People's Heroes--Leaders Images During 17-year After the Foundation of China”is mainly divided into two sections:the first section introduces the historic context of 17-year,mainly analyzing the politics, literary thought and ideological controversy in Arts Circle. The second section summarizes the basic schematisms during this period--lofty and masculine heroes and analyzes the schematisms of images, gestures and the view of their backs. The third chapter summarizes the“red sun”schematism of leaders and divides it into three types of schematisms through the analysis of specific works:revolutionary heroes, great helmsmen and youth idols. The fourth chapter”Coming Down from Altar--Leaders Images after the Reform and Opening-up Policy”mainly have two sections:the first mainly introduces the historic context during the period of the reform and opening-up policy. The second section summarizes the schematism of the leaders images who come down from the altar and divide them into two images:common leaders and deconstructive leaders.
