This paper discusses the schematism of the Chinese traditional paintings ofmountains and waters among the mural paintings in Kezile Grotto. The so-calledschematism of mountains and waters refers to the repeatedly seen patterns of chainsof mountains which appear in abundance among the mural paintings in Kezile Grotto.This paper can be mainly divided into two parts.The chains of mountains, which isthe basic unit of the paintings patterns of mountains and waters in the muralpaintings of Kezile Grotto, is mainly discussed then. Meanwhile, this paper istracing back to the historical pedigrees of paintings particularly on mastoid processes,chains of mountains and net-like patterns of rhombus among the mural paintings.The contents of this paper are mainly as the following chapters reveal:The first chapter is mainly on the significance of this research, the introductionsof research methods and research goals as well as the literature reviews plus theinnovative ideas implied in this research and its insufficient points. The secondchapter is mainly sorting out the concepts of mountains and waters in muralpaintings and the conditions on those mural paintings in Kezile Grotto. The thirdchapter is mainly analyzing the shapes and forms of pool waters, woods and trees,and the chains of mountains that were firstly revealed among the mural paintings inKezile Grotto. And the fourth chapter is mainly on those that were secondlyrevealed among the mural paintings in Kezile Grotto. The fifth chapter is tracingback such elements of historical pedigrees of paintings as mastoid processes, chainsof mountains and net-like patterns of rhombus among the mural paintings. The sixthchapter is mainly on the effects that the schematism of mountains and waters amongthe mural paintings in Kezile Grotto has upon the Dunhuang Grottoes and otherBuddhist temples situated inlands of China.
