Hector Louis Berlioz a French romantic composer in the 19 th century and the first pioneer of program music who pointed out the direction of the development of romantic program music.His "Harold in Italy" is the second programsymphony following "Symphony of Fantasy".This work has carried on the bold innovation in many aspects,to break through the traditional pattern of symphony.Therefore,the study of this work is helpful to understand the creative techniques and characteristics of Berlioz's program music.In the course of the research,this thesis uses the analytical method of combining music and narratology,not only from the perspective of context,history and culture of the works,but also deeply analyzes the close relationship between music language,program text and poetry content to strive to explore a more multi-directional,in-depth interpretation on the basis of traditional music analysis.This paper is mainly divided into four parts.The first part gives a general overview of this work from the historical and cultural aspects,in order to explore the creative background of “Harold in Italy”and combine Byron's life with the content of his poem “Childe Harold's Pilgrimage” to explore the relationship among Berlioz,Byron and Harold.The second part clarifies the narrative way of music theme from the music narration of the fixed music in the works,the relationship between the various themes and the way that theme run through,and probes into how the composer applies the narrative method of the literature to the music creation to make the relationship between hero,the theme in the literature and the fixed music in music,the theme.The third part explores the narrative mode of the music structure of the works,and combines the structural layout techniques in the literary narration to make the narrative plot of the program text in accordance with the structure of the music work which has the similar prelude,beginning,development,climax,ending with literature.The fourth part discusses the musical narrative significance of the works from the theme and structure of the works,as well as the narrative theory of the works.
