On The Application Of Three Continuous Sound Forms In The Soundtrack Of The Film "Dunkirk"

In the seventy years' development since the electronic music first appeared in 1948,the electronic music has been developed rapidly with the innovation of technology.The electronic music provided a more variety of sound resources and techniques for the composers,and more technology-based possibilities in the resources.The electronic music and film are both progressing with the assistance from technology.With the adventurous pursuit to music and to meet the needs of the sound experiences of the audience,the composers have been trying to apply the electronic music in the film.The electronic music is different from tonal music system,without the limitation of harmony,form and orchestration,all the sounds could be the material of the music in addition to the vocal sounds and instrumental sounds.The definition of music is expanded from the perspectives of sound.Therefore,electronic music has the advantage of the large variety of narrative and techniques.Film is a combined art form,so film scoring has more possibilities to assist telling the story and to express the feelings which the traditional tonal music writings could not achieve.This thesis analyzes the music in the Dunkirk from the perspectives of the sustained pitch group and explains how the music act in cooperation with images.The applications of electronic music in the film is presented with the detailed analysis of sound materials,techniques and functions of the sustained pitch group in the music.
