The Legend of White Snake is one of the four greatest Chinese tales.It origins from the legend of the Tang Dynasty and construct story framework in the Southern Song Dynasty.The White Lady in Leifeng Pagoda is the earliest story which appeared as a complete story in the Ming Dynasty.The Leifeng Pagoda is the earliest drama text,and Fang Chenpei's The Legend of Leifeng Pagoda is on the basis of Huang and Liyuan's works.It makes the character of white snake changing from negative to positive.It is the chief source of later novels and plays.The rewriting of The Legend of White Snake has a long time,a wide range of regions.and a rich number of works.However,there are many problems in the criticism of The Legend of White Snake now,such as the onefold research object,the stereotype,a lack of attention to literary genres other than fiction.Therefore,in this article,I want to investigate the characters of works of different periods in different areas,the changes in the theme of the story,and their influence on the development of modern and contemporary literature.The Legend of Write Snake in different age was influenced by the period deeply.According to the changes of ethical knowledge,this article will be divided into three parts,including all the modern and contemporary literary works about The Legend of Write Snake(mainly novels,plays,prose,poetry).The first stage is the Tang Dynasty until 1920s,describing The Legend of White Snake from the origin to the process of formation.In this process,Buddhist thought and Taoist thought have an impact on the story,but the greatest influence on the story is Confucianism.The Confucian concept of human relationship has changed the characters,plots and themes of the story.The second stage is the 20th century "The May 4th Movement" to the " The Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution" period,because of feudalism,the traditional propaganda,the authors question the traditional Confucianism.They generally choose Su-cheng and Xiao Qing to give prominence to their anti-feudal struggle spirit,to beautify Xu Xian,and make Fa Hai as the representative of the feudal forces.But in these fifty years,each of the works has its own characteristics of the times,such as the rebel image in the 1920s,the image of the mortal who revealed the darkness of society in the 1930s and 1940s,the anti feudal fighter with strong class thought under political high pressure in the 1950s and 1960s.The third stage is mainly from 1970s to now.Influenced by the western ideas,the writer of this phase ethical awareness level has improved further again.Accordingly,the literature also presents the diversified development trend.Identity dilemma,complex human nature,and the exploration of homosexuality theme make the character image also transcend the monotonous binary opposition model of good and evil,which is closer to reality.At the same time,Xu Shilin and Xiao Qing became the new representatives of the story of The Legend of White Snake,gaining more and more attention from writers and readers.
