Why Should Cai Yuanpei Take Responsibility For The New Culture Movement?

Chen Duxiu put forward Cai Yuanpei’s main responsibility for speech in the New Culture Movement.Scholars generally direct this point of view and there are few reasons for it.This paper intendeds to explore it from three aspects of science,democracy and moral.In the field of science,Cai Yuanpei’s advocacy and propaganda of science urge people to learn and master scientific methods and develop scientific minds.To arm themselves with scientific ideas,to attack feudal superstition,and to make room for the spread of new culture and new ideas;In the area of political thought,because Cai Yuanpei advocated democratic thought in the movement and opened the air of freedom,advocated the equality of all people and ruled the people from feudal autocracy.In the respect of moral Cai Yuanpei advocated new morality,opposed old morality and encouraged the people to develop their personality.Under the appealed of Cai Yuanpei and other people,the people began to accept the new morality of the Democratic Republic,pay attention to the cultivation of their virtues,and thus enhance their national character.In view of Cai Yuanpei’s contributions in three aspects: science,political and moral.He can be regarded as primarily responsible for the speech of the New Culture Movement.
