An Analysis Of He Shushuang's Mencius Grammar Research

Study of the Mencius Grammar by He Shushuang,a scholar of the Republic of China,is one of the rare works concerning the study of Mencius grammar during that period.In this book,the author supplemented the research on the thoughts of Mencius during the period of the Republic of China,and on the other hand interpreted as well as made his comments on Mencius from the perspective of literature highlighting great artistic value.This article analyzes the Study of the Mencius Grammar from its composition and narrative to rhetoric,affirming its value and pointing out its insufficiency.This article is divided into five chapters:Chapter one is the introduction.It briefly explains the reasons and signification of subject selection,as well as the research status,methods and ideas,showing the value of this article.Chapter two introduces the background information and style of Study of the Mencius Grammar.The author gains a better understanding of the historical background of the Republic period through the scholar He Shushuang,and the overall grasp of the style of his book,laying a foundation for the later analysis.Chapter three discusses the art of composition in Mencius.He appreciated and commented the subject,structure,rhetoric methods,and writing skills respectively,providing great learning and reference value for later scholars in appreciation and writing.Chapter four is about the analysis of the narrative methods employed in Menciu He analyzed the narrative techniques in Mencius from the questions and answers,echo,composition,combination of elaborate and concise description and so on,enabling us to better apprehend and learn the narrative features in Mencius.Chapter five is the analysis of the rhetoric in Mencius.He interpreted and commented from different aspects,such as characters,syntax,rhetoric,and spoke highly of the artistic attainments of Mencius,which provided a significant reference for further reading and studying Mencius from the literacy perspective.In the appendix,this article briefly analyzes the comments made by He on the linguistic characters of Mencius and draws a comparison between Mencius and western thoughts.In a word,He inherited Chinese traditional criticism and carried on comments methods in the Ming and Qing dynasties.His comments methods in Study of the Mencius Grammar had certain influence on appreciation and comments of future generations.Therefore,analyzing the Study of the Mencius Grammar by He is conducive to exploring the literacy and artistic values of Mencius,and boasts academic value and historical significance for discussing the development of text-centered Chinese criticism.
