From the art world's perspective, traditional "Chinese Portrait Painting" has undergone more than 2,000 years of evolution and development, which has created a beautiful style and unique system of painting. From the beginning of the 20th century however, fundamental changes in the brushwork and colouring of traditional Chinese Painting began to appear, the main reason for this was the introduction of "Realism" style Painting brought from the west to China by Xu Beihong, which created a new and exciting twist to the traditional style, this was the start of a new era of painting.Jiang Zhaohe's artistic practice and the formation of "Xu&Jiang performance"had a significant influence on the development of modern Chinese paintings. In terms of the use of ink and the selectivity of colours, the modern style of Chinese painting not only kept the exclusive characteristics of traditional Chinese painting, but also adopted the formal drawing elements of western modernism painting, showing great richness and diversity.Afterwards, many artists inherited the "Xu Jiang system" directly and because of this Chinese painting took a big step forward in the method of brushwork, style and selectivity of colours, etc.Such as Lu Chen and Zhou Sicong who became iconic figures in the development of modern Chinese Portrait Painting. Also many artists became Practitioners and pioneers of this system, such as the contemporary artist Yuan Wu.This dissertation takes "The Early Morning of Jokhang Temple" of Yuan Wu as an example to analyze the works and styles of several representative contemporary Chinese Ink Portrait painting artists. At the same time, this dissertation combines my own understanding of the relationship between ink and colour in the graduation project process,as well as my own practical experience. This also provides me with a clearer vision on how to create my future projects.
