The “Kingdom of Desire” performed at Contemporary Legend Theatre was the precedent of intercultural adaptation of Beijing Opera in Taiwan,which is a renovation based on the traditional drama actor training.This play is presented in the Chinese classic art form,interrogated the advantages of western play on the aspects of plot structure,personal character,therefore,it is a cross-cultural adaptation process from Shakespearian play “Macbeth” to Beijing Opera “Kingdom of desire”.Beijing opera “Kingdom of Desire” have got a lot of praises in the course of Chinese and international performance,and got some controversies either.Adapting “Macbeth” into “Kingdom of Desire” was a process that a Shakespearian play was adapted to Beijing Opera.What kind of collision and fusion can this be? In the process when these two completely different literary tradition play are adapting and conflicting each other,what changes will happen to each of them? What is the significance of the breakthrough and deformation in the contemporary development of Shakespearian play and Beijing opera as well as in the cross-cultural communication? These are the questions we will discuss about in this article.We took “Macbeth” and “Kingdom of desire” as our research object,did thorough analysis to the dramatic transformation in the cross-cultural adaptation and discussed the influence and significance these transformations did to Shakespearian play “Macbeth” and Beijing Opera.We will discuss from three parts in this essay,introduction,main body,and conclusion.First of all,we elaborated the research significance of this project,then,we specifically introduced the current research status of this project and the relative topics under discussion,thus brought forward the research topics that can be further discussed on the basis of current research.At last,we proposed the research strategies and the main idea in order to solve the problems.The main body of the essay is consisted of four chapters.In the first chapter,we briefly introduced the adaptation situation of “Macbeth” on the Chinese Opera stage,then,illustrated the aspects of “Macbeth” that coincides with Beijing Opera,hence answered the question why “Macbeth” could have been successfully adapted into Chinese opera.In the first chapter,we elaborated the adaptation and fusion of “Macbeth” to Beijing Opera “Kingdom of desire” on the aspects of time,environment,plot structure and characters arrangement,and concluded the idea “Kingdom of desire” wants to express.In the second chapter,we discussed the difference of characterization in “Macbeth” and “Kingdom of desire”.Based on the influence of Beijing opera and other factors,we analyzed the shaping of character trait,the detailed psychological description of the characters,and the exaggerated,vivid and emotional portrait of the character figures,then made further discussion about the relationship between the tragic spirit transformation and the manifestation pattern of Beijing opera.We discussed the aesthetic experience change in “Kingdom of Desire” from tragic spirit and procedure aesthetic two aspects.On the basis of previous chapters,in the fourth chapter we discussed the crosscultural adaptation of “Kingdom of Desire”,explained on which aspects Beijing opera did enrichment and renovation to extend and enrich the Shakespearian play in the process of cross-cultural adaptation of “Macbeth” and “Kingdom of desire”.In the conclusion,we concluded the major arguments in this essay and did overall evaluation to the adaptation of “Kingdom of desire”.
