Lin Zhongyi's Comments On The Study Of "Zhuangzi"

The Zhuangzi commentary was a new way of interpreting Zhuangzi in the Southern Song Dynasty.After several generations of scholars 'unremitting efforts in the research of Zhuangzi,excellent works such as Zhuangzi Jie by Wu Shishang,Xuan Ying's Nanhua Jingjie,and Liu Fengbao's Nanhua Xuexinbian in the heyday of the Qing Dynasty.The Nanhua Benyi by Lin Zhongyi was born under the circumstances of the prosperity of Zhuangzi commentary in the Qing Dynasty.It's greatest feature of explaining Zhuangzi is to explain Zhuangzi with the help of Neo-Confucianism,which directly leads to the fact that Lin Zhongyi and his work have not been highly appraised in the history of Zhuangzi's studies.However,Lin Zhongyi's interpretation of the Zhuangzi still has its own unique features and has certain research value.This article is divided into four chapters besides the introduction.The introduction part mainly states the significance of this topic and the current research situation.As mentioned above,Lin Zhongyi's Nanhua Benyi has not received too much attention and evaluation in the history of Zhuangzi's studies.It is often regarded as an example of the popularity of explain Zhuangzi by Neo-Confucianism in the Qing Dynasty,while other shining points in his works,such as the analysis of Zhuangzi's textual structure,have not been thoroughly explored.Chapter one mainly introduces Lin Zhongyi and his work on the limited data,this paper briefly introduce Lin Zhongyi's life from two aspects: family background and lifetime.It also gives a brief overview of the background of the emergence of Nanhua Benyi from the revival of Qing Dynasty's agent science and the rise of Zhuangzi's theory.Finally,it discusses the linguistic features of Nanhua Benyi.Chapter two discusses the interpretation of Zhuangzi in The Nanhua Benyi.Lin Zhongyi was deeply influenced by Neo-Confucianism,so he mainly explained Zhuangzi through Neo-Confucianism,especially Zhu Zi's Philosophy.The most prominent manifestation is that he connected the concept of "Dao" in Zhuangzi with the concept of "Tianli" in Neo-Confucianism and solved Zhuangzi by Taiji.Finally,he analyzed Lin Zhongyi's theory from two aspects of gain and loss.The third chapter is to discuss the analysis of the artistic characteristics of Zhuangzi in The Nanhua Benyi.Lin Zhongyi regards the seven chapters in Zhuangzi as an interrelated whole.In addition,he analyses Zhuangzi by using the theory of the combination of virtual reality and positive and negative,and sums up the methods used by Zhuangzi in the process of writing,such as honeybee waist and crane knee,elevation of net outline,twelve-point doubling and so on.Chapter Four analyses the discussion of the attribution of Zhuangzi's thought in Nanhua Benyi.Lin Zhongyi disagrees with the view that Zhuangzi belongs to Confucianism,but thinks that some languages in Zhuangzi are similar to Confucian classics.In Lin Zhongyi's opinion,the thought of Nanhua Benyi is actually closer to Buddhism.
