Twelve Chapters is a classic work of ancient pattern design.As twelve kinds of patterns drawn or stitched on clothing in feudal society,it embodies the ingenuity of ancient design,reflects certain cultural connotations,highlights strong national consciousness,and has certain reference and research value in its shape,color and implications.Of course,its ideology of feudal hierarchy and aesthetic stylization is undeniable.This paper expounds the cultural meaning and artistic value of Twelve Chapters from the social and semiotic perspectives,and expounds that the expression of the connotation of a design is related to the specific social history and aesthetic consciousness.Twelve Chapters has became a visual symbol full of national consciousness through artistic expression and continuous spread,and has certain enlightenment for future generations.This paper also explores a new way of redesigning Twelve Chapters in the context of contemporary Chinese society and culture.In artistic creation,only by combining traditional patterns with new concepts,new technologies and new materials,and constantly exploring the interestingness of pattern application as well as the diversity of creative thinking,can we create patterns with national,contemporary,artistic and original characteristics,thus promoting the diversification of graphic design.
