Hemingway once declared that Spain was his favorite place. In his works,Spain appears repeatedly as both a theme and a background. As an image of a cultural other,Spain means a lot to Hemingway.Hemingway's Spanish works are rich in subject matter, delicate and changeable in structure, and profound in thought without a lack of humanistic care.Although the works have received more and more studies and attention,it is still insufficient. In particular, the study on the works of Spain's overall narrative space is not sufficient.Typical images are selected for close reading of the text to explore the characteristics of Spain in Hemingway's writing. And from the literary geography, national culture, time thought and writer creation and other aspects, the causes of such characters are probed into. Finally,Hemingway's identification with and alienation from Spanish culture is reflected from the perspective of American intellectuals in the novel. From this kind of misreading,it is enough to explore Hemingway's complex feelings about Spain and his personal pursuit of ideals. And the reference significance of Spanish culture to the American mainstream culture and society can be analyzed.Based on this, the main body is divided into three partsThe first chapter combs the three period when Hemingway has a relationship with Spain. The first period was 1919-1932,during which Hemingway went to Spain to watch bullfighting. The second period was the Spanish civil war;The third period was 1953,when Hemingway returned to the post-war Spain to watch bullfighting. At that time, his reception and thinking of Spanish culture changed greatly, compared with the previous periods.Through combing,a time grasp of the context of Hemingway's contact with Spain is obtained, which is of great importance to understand Hemingway's changes in thoughts and feelings on Spanish culture. The second chapter divides the Spanish images in Hemingway's works into three categories by combing his specific works in the Spanish narrative space.the specific emotional trend of Hemingway towards the Spanish culture are analyzed from the three aspects of the writing of the natural landscape, the description of bullfighting culture in Spain and the shaping of the soldiers in the civil war.The third chapter selects the images of three American intellectuals in Hemingway's Spanish works. As viewers, they seek the spiritual way out and direction of American bourgeois intellectuals in the interaction with Spanish culture.Through the summary of the three chapters,we can find Hemingway's love and affirmation of Spanish culture, especially bullfighting culture, which has provided a code of conduct for the disillusioned young people after the first world war,and has showed the questioning of the defects of American culture and the reflection of modern capitalist civilization as well. The image of Spanish bullfighter in Hemingway's works has the saving significance to the individual who is disillusioned spiritually. As a bourgeois intellectual,Hemingway also has an ambiguous attitude towards the communists in the war, apart from the sympathy and admiration for the Spanish people and hatred for fascism. On the one hand,he eulogizes the proletarian revolutionaries with the courage to resist; On the other hand,he also makes his own analysis and interpretation of the defeat of the republican army.Hemingway's interpretation of the Spanish revolution is not only limited by his own ideology and class, but also the result from his choice of "misreading".With the deepening of Hemingway's understanding of the Spanish national spirit and culture, the Spanish images of his writing are no longer merely a mirror reflecting the ugliness of capitalist industrial civilization. And these images dynamically urge the “viewers” to complete their self-personality building.
