Festivals,as an important and colorful component of secular life,are oftentimes interwoven with religious beliefs,myths and legends,which are rich in conventions and customs.Therefore,festivals have become a source from which San Yan Er Pai retrieves its inspirations.And San Yan and Er Pai runs the whole gamut of festival narrations.The novelist's narrations of festivals reflect the significance that festivals take on creating novels.These daily life contents have taken novels to a new level of lifelike authenticity that piques readers' interest and brings visibility,which also holds a mirror to the social trends and people's mentality of that society,making San Yan and Er Pai a valuable “living fossil” in the field of ancient customs studies.Ergo,with San Yan and Er Pai being the subject of study,this dissertation takes on a systematic arrangement and study of festival narrations that made presence here.Starting with re-composition,a quest for the change in the adaptation of festival narrations from the original to Huaben stories is made.By investigating the alterations of festivals Huaben stories made to the original,a closer study of San Yan and Er Pai is brought forward with a more holistic and thorough discussion of its literary and folklore values.This dissertation studies the festival depictions in San Yan and Er Pai from three aspects.Part one focuses on sorting out festivals that are discussed in this dissertation,exploring the state of play of festival inheritance and development,as well as the reasons for the novelist's depiction of festivals.The novelist included considerable festival narrations in the process of polishing and recomposing previous works,which displays the pattern from cursory to elaborate,from non-existential to ubiquitous.But the frequency and level of elaboration varies depending on different festivals,manifesting an obvious imbalance.The cause for the presence of abundant festival narrations lies in the enrichment and development of festivals,the novelist's creative concepts,readers' aesthetic taste and the tradition of literary composition.Part two is centered around the literary values of festival narrations.Depictions of festivals contribute to intense plots,character creation,and topic prominence.The third part is about the folklore value of festival narrations.And those narrations reflect the the secularization of Buddhism,their entertaining features and the mass' beliefs.
