Since the establish of the People's Republic of China,lots of west foreigners have taken a series of Chinese themed documentaries in the mainland of China.Not only they have left behind precious image segments,but also showed the vary aspects of China,a far eastern country to the whole world.As the most important traditional festival for Chinese,the Spring Festival witnesses the significant moment for the annual reunion of each family every New Year.In order to celebrate Spring Festival,ethnic groups in every regions will organize and participate in various folk activities,these Spring Festival folk activities are parts of the precious cultural treasures that our traditional culture inherits and accumulates in the long river of history.After 2000,China's economic power and cultural strength have grown rapidly,more and more western documentaries are made of Chinese subject matter.Spring Festival's Folk activities themed with Chinese characteristics and Chinese traditional culture have raised wide attention.Aiming at making further efforts on protecting and disseminating folk culture,as well as strengthening national cohesion and centripetal force with the aid of folk culture,Chinese televisions led by CCTVs and network video platforms also have taken many documentaries with the same subject matter as westerns'.However,in both Chinese and western documentaries,some scenes about folk activities are similar whereas the presentation and effect are different.In this sense,this paper starts from the perspective of cross-cultural communication,several Chinese and western documentaries taken after 2000 are chosen,the author did researches on the differences on rendering effects and cultural effects of Chinese and foreign documentaries which have their own narrative strategies for the folk culture of the Spring Festival.Then the paper will discuss cultural discount and its reasons appeared in the process of intercultural communication,as well as how to make better progress in popularizing Chinese folk customs to the world through the cross-cultural communication.The research of this paper mainly contains three parts:the first part is based on film narratology.The author made comparative analysis on selected Chinese and western documentaries.On the Macro level,the differences of film narrative strategies of Chinese and western documentaries on Spring Festival folk culture are investigated from the perspective of film narratology.On the micro level,audio-visual language of the scene of New Year's Eve dinner in both the Chinese and western documentaries are made for comparison.In viewing of the presentation of Chinese national elements and symbols in Chinese and western documentaries,the author analyzed stresses and weakening of traditional culture and values in Chinese and western documentaries.The second part starts from the perspective of the comparison of Chinese and the Western culture in order to study the reason of differences in Chinese and foreign documentaries concerning Chinese folk activities.Based on comparative analysis of Chinese and western aesthetic concepts,languages and values,the influences of Chinese and western cultural differences on cross-cultural documentaries are observed.The third part explores cultural and political reasons for obstacles such as obscure,distort,misreading and one-sided appeared in the process of cross-cultural communication among Chinese and western folk documentaries from the perspective of intercultural communication,and strategies relating how Chinese and westerners could do better in telling Chinese folk stories are given.This paper found that in rendering Chinese folk activities,Chinese and western documentaries have differences on presenting the same subject of Chinese New Year's folk activities,which embodied in narrative strategies and the dealt with traditional culture possessed in folk activities.In Chinese documentaries,folk customs exist with the purpose of recording traditional culture,enhancing national cohesion and improving international influence.Nevertheless,in addition to understand Chinese culture,western photography also aim to create further viewing and to implant western culture in the Chinese society.The differences are obvious between Chinese and western on the same theme of Chinese Spring Festival folk activities.To spread Chinese folk culture to the rest of the world,China should make great efforts for the internationalization of Chinses folk culture.Foreign countries should try to find a way out beside looking for new topic angle and narrative plan,and enhance cooperation between China and foreign countries,so as to tell stories of China.
