| Along with the growth of international exchange, the transmission and promotion of the time-honored Chinese civilization has great epochal value and historic significance. The translation of Chinese folk culture is the bridge of Sino-foreign cultural interaction and it shoulders the responsibility of carrying forward the Chinese traditional culture. The Qiqiao Festival in Guangzhou is the name card of Guangzhou local folk culture. Introducing the festival to foreigners is beneficial for the world to have a better understanding of the local customs of Guangzhou. This thesis is based on the version of Chinese-English translation project of Exquisite Handicrafts Lighten Qixi Festival:Guangzhou Qiqiao Festival to discuss the translation of folk culture. The book is one of the series of Guangzhou folk art. In the project, the writer selected two chapters, Beauty in Shape, Color and Craftwork, Subtlety in Mind and Manual Work and Seminar on Qiqiao Cultural Festival in2005: Focusing on the Communication and Development, about10,000words to translate. A lot of culture-loaded words and short sentences with scattered structures have been found in the original text. In order to translate these words, the author referred to the parallel texts concerning the translation of folk culture according to these features. Some translation methods have been used under the guidance of Skopos Theory, such as transliteration with annotations, literal translation with comments, free translation, voice conversion and other translation methods. The thesis consists of the task description, the process description, case study and summary. The background and significance of the translating project, the main content of The Qiqiao Festival in Guangzhou, the main characteristics of the text about folk culture and the specific procedures of completing the translation were introduced in the two previous parts. The case study is the essence of this translation practice report. Using the English version of Exquisite Handicrafts Lighten Qixi Festival:Guangzhou Qiqiao Festival as research material, the author made some attempts in translating cultural words on the basis of the previous translations of such texts. The research and exploration were done on the strategies and skills of the folk cultural translation at the same time. The defects and the gains in the translation practice were analyzed and summarized in the last part, including some suggestions for the translation of folk culture.Through the analysis of the translation process and the case study, the author holds the opinion that a deep understanding of the cultural background, connotation and evolution should be involved in translating the folk cultural texts. Meanwhile, the translation methods of parallel texts and the texts of the same type should be borrowed. Only in this way can we achieve better culture transmission. |
