As a famous calligrapher in the late Qing Dynasty,Yang Xian also has outstanding achievements in poetry and epigraphy.He made many friends throughout his life,he establishes Jie She,sings poetry,communicate calligraphy,appreciate and collect inscriptions with his friends.He has acquired achievements in all fields.Enlightened by the thought of advocating the study of inscriptions in the late Qing Dynasty,Yang Xian absorbs the essence of the simplicity and strength in the Han monument,inherits the experience of predecessors and brings forth new ideas,and finally develops a style of his own.His official script was emphasized by the people of the time and he was called "Yang Li".Yang Xian has achieved magnificent attainment in calligraphy,and his official script can be divides into three stages.In the beginning,he Iearns Han clerical script in Jie She and takes it as his model for calligraphy,which contributes to his elegant and classic script style.Then,being affected by the popular trend at that time highlighting individual personality,he prefers cursive script.But finally,he returns to Han clerical script and makes a perfect combination of Han clerical script and cursive script.Therefore,botli classic styles featured by Han clerical script and natural styles featured by cursive script could be found in his calligraphy.In terms of running script,he learns it from Yan Zhenqing and mixes it with clerical script in order to combine conventional and casual styles.After huge amounts of writing practice,Yang Xian establishes his own theoretical system towards calligraphy:he adores rubbings from Han tablet inscriptions,Han clerical script and traditional writing style;also,he values originality and individuality more than rigid convention.Yang Xian attains superb achievements in calligraphy with high status and reputation,besides,his unique way and thoughts of writing not only enriches the categories of Han clerical script,but also leaves a far-reaching impact on his successors.
