“Xu Jing” was an important concept in Chinese classical aesthetics,which was mainly formed in Taoist thought.Therefore,it was elucidated and evolved with Metaphysics in Wei and Jin Dynasties,which was based on Taoist thought.Meanwhile,it could be found a lot in A New Account of the Tales of the World.The influence of “Xu Jing”thought developed from mental states to life styles,art activities,literature activities and aesthetic tastes.The mutual influence of metaphysics and Buddhism in Wei and Jin dynasties also created a richer space for the interpretation of the thought of “Xu Jing”.The scholars of different groups showed different elegant demeanour.The scholars of the Wei and Jin Dynasties were limited by the historical environment of the bad situation and could not realize the scholars' traditional mission to help the country and people.Instead,they were easily persecuted because of the moral integrity.What's worse,they were confronted with the social atmosphere of indulging in sensuality and dehumanization.In a word,scholars were in a dilemma between hardly showing their statecraft or keeping good quality in a lonely sad.In the constant attempt of self-salvation,the scholars found the “Xu Jing” as a cure for the soul and the realization of self-comfort.They also showed personal characters such as peace of returning to farm the land in village,exquisite craftsmanship like dismembering an ox as skillfully as a butcher,calm as the life is nothing.The literary activities in the Wei and Jin Dynasties can be mainly divided into two categories: idle talk and literary creation,and there was also some progress in literary theory.With the idle talk,the thought of “Xu Jing” absorbed the quintessences of metaphysics,Taoist school,Confucianism and Buddhism.Firstly,it put emphasis on interpreting the Tao Te Ching,Zhuangzi and I Ching.Then,it referred to the meaning of Prajna and the method of communication between souls with nature from conforming to nature outside to keeping the spirit inherently.The mainstream of literary creation was still ode and the poem became flowery and rhetoric.By contrast,the genuine feelings in the vigorous style of“Jian An” and Zuo Si as well as the deep silence of Tao Yuanming's poems were precious.The scholars in Wei and Jin Dynasties had rich aesthetic experiences.In the aesthetics of life,they pursued the simplicity,freedom and unconstraint.With aestheticism as the mainstream of aesthetics,they could also recognize the different forms of beauty and obsessed with their own discovery of beauty rather than the beauty itself.And within the frequent use of natural concepts in the judgements on persons,the scholars showed their extremely sensitivity to the nature and they could merge into nature with sensibility,forget the nature with ultra perception,turn into utterances with reason.As a result,the short-term moment infinitely prolonged,realizing the aesthetic experience of intangibility and transcendence of intuitive apprehension from the sudden enlightenment of insight.
