On "Sleep" In Proust's Novels

Fiction writing is a form of art that focuses on soberness.“Sleep”,as a habitat for consciousness,has always rejected the sober consciousness activity,often opposed to writing.However,in Proust's novels,the two formed a harmonious production relationship.The fictional context of the novel broadens the boundaries of "sleep",which enriches the textual imagery of the novel and develops different levels of text.First of all,"sleep" as a writing experience,under the counteraction of Romanticism to the Enlightenment,has gained a specific connotation.At the same time,in modern urban life,sleep is continuously deprived and turned into an insomnia.Anxiety and insomnia inspire the “neural hallucinations” of art creators.Writing centered on "insomnia" is both a meditation and a self-reflection.In the aesthetic shift to rationality,Proust gave the unique aesthetic meaning of human sleep with its own unrepeatable life experience,and realized the return of poetic memories.Secondly,Proust placed "sleep" as the starting point of all stories at the beginning of the novel's recollections,re-examined the past occurrences,made it turn to the past retrospection and restatement,and turned to the future,becoming the "creation" of the memories,showing the character of "different".As a target of writing,Proust's "sleep" presents a rich posture: insomnia with confusion and anxiety,sleepiness of "blank",psychedelic and real dreams.Through the transition between these different sleep states,the novel reveals a gradual process between rational self-consciousness and perceptual pure forgetting,creating a dark and fantastic textual mood.Finally,"sleep" as an intervention means that the narrative subject's recollection of past events is not only mechanical reproduction,but participation in the creation of memories.It is the character of sleep that explains the strong poetic essence of Proust's narrative.Through the intervention of sleep,on the one hand,it cuts off the continuity of memories and presents a kind of poetic dispersion.On the other hand,the memories produced from sleep have not fallen into a kind of nothingness that can't be recovered in the past,but has become a creative experience through the body.The text is also present an eternal openness in the process of turning from the past to the future.By analyzing this novel,this paper shows the appearance of "sleep" in Proust's novels,and proves that "sleep" contributes to creation,so that sleep is no longer regarded as a marginal product other than rationality,but an alternative way of seeing and experiencing the world.And further pointed out that sleep how to implement a common with artistic creation: sleep as a way of getting people out of self-surface consciousness,causing the break and reconstruction of memories,it left the center of attention,but develops a richer image,with creative memories echoing the cognitive relationship between man and the world.
