As a special art in the system of Chinese traditional culture, calligraphy has become a beautiful work of art with its unique style, structure and chapter. The value of calligraphy art needs to be expressed through aesthetic activities.Aesthetic appreciation of calligraphy is an important research field of calligraphy art and the core problem of calligraphy aesthetics research,it is closely related to the creation of calligraphy, both of which promote the development of calligraphy art.Aesthetic appreciation of calligraphy works cannot be separated from the psychological activities of aesthetic subjects, which is essentially a physiological and psychological activity, but lacks of scientific research at present.Empirical research provides objective evidence for the theoretical point of view, which is not conducive to calligraphy aesthetics and the scientific process of calligraphy art. This study will focus on the two core aspects of aesthetic appreciation of calligraphy works-the psychological mechanism of content and style processing, which will help to clarify the theory and controversy of calligraphy aesthetics and calligraphy art.To promote the human appreciation of calligraphy aesthetic appreciation of the general rules of activity understanding. This study explored the process of calligraphy content and style in the appreciation of calligraphy art through behavior experiment and ERP experiment. The results have certain reference value for understanding the process of aesthetic appreciation of calligraphy art.In experiment 1 we examined the dynamics of processing of style and content by means of the microgenetic approach. This approach systematically varies perceptual conditions to find out about the stages involved in the formation of percepts-their microgenesis.Participants gave similarity ratings for pairs of pictures that were fully crossed in style and content.Presentation times were systematically varied between 20,60,250 and 3000ms.It is found that effects of style were present at all four presentation time conditions, but effects of content traceable from 60ms onwards. The results showed that there are significant differences between the processing of content information and the processing of style information, which suggesting that in calligraphy art perception content follows style. In the current ERP study,we examined the neural time course of two central aspects of calligraphy art:content and style. We adapted a paradigm that has repeatedly been employed in psycholinguistics and that allows one to examine the neural time course of two processes in terms of when sufficient information is available to allow successful classification. The dependent variables of interest were the Lateralised Readiness Potential(LRP)and the N200 effect.Analyses of both measures support the notion that in the processing of calligraphy art content follows style, with content-related information being available at around 504ms or between 108 and 152ms later than style-related information.Specifically, under the condition of "Hand=style",both go and nogo trial produced difference wave for LRP component, but under the condition of "Hand=content",only go trial induced LRP;For the N200 effect, the initial latency of N200 of "Hand=content" was significantly earlier than that of "Hand=style".The whole research showed that in the process of aesthetic appreciation of calligraphy art, style processing in front of the content processing in the back, content processing is about 108-152ms later than the style processing in the process of aesthetic appreciation of calligraphy art.The study used here offers a promising approach to further explore the time course of calligraphy art perception, thus helping to unravel the perceptual and cognitive processes that underlie the phenomenon of calligraphy art and the fascination it exerts.
