Liu Mengkang, as one of the leading calligraphists in ancient statein Sichuan during the Republic of China, had his own distinctive styleof calligraphy. He was not only a calligraphist who was famous for theregular script, the cursive script, the official scruipt and the sealscript, but also a revolutionary as well as a poet with extremely excellentartistic appreciation. Mr. Liu’s style became mature in the Republic ofChina, a period full of various kinds of thoughts, cultures and art, whileit was also a turbulent time. Mr. Liu withstood severe trials all his life.It was the special experience and solid attainments of Chinese culturalstudies that built his different artistic style. We can clearly find outthat Mr. Liu’s style had changed from beautiful and robust to smooth andvigorous. This thesis focuses on Mr.Liu’s artistic style and explores hiscalligraphy in different periods,depending on his works. Meanwhile, wecan comb a clue about how he formed his style taking the cursive scriptas an example. Finally, we can aquire the enlightment about how to studythe calligraphy.
