The cultivation of junior middle school students' oral English competence is an important part in English teaching.In 2016,the Ministry of Education issued the reform programme that involved the oral test into the junior high school entrance exam,which confirmed that the country emphasize the oral English ability of middle school students.Compared with Students' high score in the examination,their oral English ability is relatively weak,which are all under the lack of clear,systematic teaching objectives and scientific,unified measurement standards as well as the background of Examination-Oriented education.At present,the lack of comprehensive language ability is a common situation for students.Therefore,it is of great importance to help junior high school students and English teachers to understand the current situation and the affecting factors of students' oral English ability so as to effectively help students improve their oral English competence.This study combines quantitative analyses and qualitative analyses to investigate the current situation,problems and the affecting factors of oral English.The research methods include oral test,questionnaire survey and interviews.There are three different types of school in Weifang city were investigated.Firstly,this paper conducted a oral tests on 120 junior students under the method of simple random sampling.Adopting the level 3 requirements of the China's Standards of English as the evaluation criterion,the oral test was conducted from phonetic intonation,vocabulary,syntax,cohesion,expression and expression strategy to find the current situation and problems of students' spoken English.Secondly,this study uses a questionnaire survey to investigate 300 junior students and interviews nine English teachers to explore the affecting factors of junior students' oral English.The results show that the overall level of junior students' oral English ability has not reached the level 3 required by the China's Standards of English.The ability of phonetic intonation,vocabulary,and expression have reached the set target.However,the syntactic,cohesive and communication strategy ability have not yet reached the target.In addition,the teacher's educational ideas and professional competence,students' learning habits and emotional factors as well as the lack of language environment are all important reasons for the junior middle school students' oral competence.In order to improve the oral English ability of junior high school students,based on the research results,this study puts forward several suggestions: First,teachers should change the traditional teaching educational ideas and continuously improve their professionalism,and create a relaxing and enjoyable oral learning environment in the classroom so as to alleviate the students' oral learning anxiety.Secondly,the students should change the learning motivation of‘entrance exam',strengthen the study of basic language knowledge and try to get into the habit of oral learning.Finally,the school and the family should joint an educational synergy to promote the improvement of students' oral ability.
