Storytelling In Documentary

My graduation work "Concrete Jungle" is a typical documentary.The theme is selected from the trainer who performs liger in the zoo.This film focuses on the life of a trainer’s family.They are a small family in a large performing group and a miniature of a large common group.After performing day after day,waiting for applause,and then sending off the tourists who come here,they can boldly share a room with liger...They have not been delighted with the applause for a long time,the outside world has been questioning their work,the call for canceling the performance is getting louder and louder,and the job opportunities are facing reduction...The gate of the zoo is the only way to the outside for them.Although the gate will be closed,it will not be locked.It is more difficult for them to "choose" than to open the gate.Concrete forest is a portrayal of the real living environment of wild animals.They have to be trapped in a narrow space and passively feed food to survive.For animal trainers,how to go to the huge city formed by the" concrete forest" outside the gate is also a huge challenge."Concrete Jungle" adopts the creation technique of using real recorded scenes supplemented by story-based arrangement.Documentary arranged in this way makes the film itself more understandable and more acceptable to the public due to the addition of story.This documentary story-based creation technique or arrangement method is also an important feature of the development of documentaries today,and it is also a form of expression that meets the aesthetic needs of today.On the premise of real events,the documentary uses storytelling to present the daily work and life of the trainers,including real scenes,real stories and real characters,as well as tender stories,dramatic conflicts and happy endings.Based on the creation experience of the documentary "Concrete Jungle",this article elaborates the director of "Concrete Jungle" through four parts,mainly including the film’s selection process,preliminary planning process,mid-term shooting process and later editing process,and analyzes the film’s creation with the real practice process and the creation method under the guidance of theory.In the first part,I will elaborate the creation process and the documentary film from the process of selecting topics and planning in the early stage.In the second part,I will analyze the main structure of the film from the aspects of documentary story narration,character images,audio-visual language,etc.In the third part,I will give my thoughts and personal insights on the creation of the film.
