In order to enrich the research data of timpani performance and analysis, this paper performed and studied the American composer Schinstine,William J.'s “Timpani Sonata”.The song breaks the hearing habits and the rule of people's past feelings about the strength of the beat, making “weak in the strong beat, strong in the weak beat” become the performing concept throughout the whole song.Under the objective conditions of the timpani music volume and because of the limited range of the timpani players' wingspan, sometimes the cost of the players' limb movement and work is too high during the process of beating the drum and changing the drum. For this problem, this paper summarizes the principle of proximity and flexibility which can improve the performing quality and efficiency at the maximum. At the same time,in terms of performing skills, this paper summarizes the different ways of using double-hop skills in different situations-in some phrases, the left and right hands alternately produce the same performance as one-handed double-hop.Secondly,this paper summarizes the timpani sound discrimination and tuning techniques which appear in the music. Finally, from the perspective of the analysis of the works, the styles and techniques of the three movements of the song are summarized and studied. The first movement bB major T13 high stack chords expresses the harmony tempo of the modern jazz style of the song, giving the audience an innovation of hearing experience. The slow movement of the second movement is complemented by the Debussy-style impressionism style. And the dialogue between the timpani and the piano presents a soft picture like water and wave. The third movement responds to the first movement, which os firm and magnificent, promoting the work to a climax. This paper studies the “Timpani Sonata” from the two aspects of performance and analysis and analyzes the song from the perspective of performance and composition, which gives the performers and creators inspiration.
